Sávri

The work Sávri was produced in Canada in the fall of 2025 in collaboration with 25 women from 6 different nations from Baie-st-Paul and Senneterre in Quebec, Canada.

During a 5-week residency. This project is linked to my other project Written in Stone 2020 - which is an ongoing project about Sami women who have experienced domestic violence.  The installation Sávri is made from 6 different types of wood, yarn and animal bones, glass beads and some silver pendants.

I learned the women a 4- thread braiding technique, that we in Sápmi often use to decorate our shoes, belt and mittens with.

We also collaborated with a lokal alpakka farm in Baie-st-Paul @alpagascharlevoix that donated the yarn we used.

We made 163 braids. Those are suspended on 13 branches of 6 different tree types, representing the 6 nations. 500 cm in diameter and 230 cm high.

The 2 branches in the middle have 34 braids with one bone on that symbolise all the backbones in one body. For the woman who has managed to keep her back straight after surviving domestic violence.

Sávri means endurace in a person.

The installation was on display in Rouyn Noranda until January 2026.
